Pipe Major John MacDonald (of Inverness)

b. 1865    d. 1953

From a family of professional pipers, he enjoyed great success in competitions in the first decades of the twentieth century. He was associated with the Piobaireachd Society. These tracks are part of a set of the first commercial recordings of piobaireachd made for Columbia in the winter of 1926-7. The tunes were abridged to suit the time available on disk. There is much on MacDonald and on the making of these recordings in William Donaldson’s book The Highland Pipe and Scottish Society 1750-1950. East Linton, 2000.
