Jessie Niven Maclachlan, a native of Mull, was among the first to tour extensively as a stage singer of Gaelic song. She sang for Queen Victoria and undertook extensive foriegn tours including the 1901 tour of North America. She made the first even commercial gramophone recording of Gaelic song in September 1899.
